How To: Tag ’em Right

Essential skills for every angler

Speed and accuracy are critical when tagging a fish. Ideal tag placement is at the base of the dorsal fin in the meaty part of the back. Things happen fast when a billfish is boat-side, so concentration is essential. Resist the urge to make a harpoon like stab with the tag stick as the fish swims by. Instead, wait for the fish to settle, then move the stick smoothly into position. As soon as it touches the target spot, jab hard and fast to bury the tag solidly in one sure motion.
