Learning to cast left-handed

What instructional DVD or CDs are available for left-handed fly casters?

Q: I have a friend who is left-handed and very interested in learning how to fly cast. What instructional DVD or CDs are available for left-handed fly casters? I get confused trying to teach him, and I would like for him to learn.

A: I am not aware of any DVD or CD specifically for left-handers, Allen. I believe there are five criteria for being a good casting instructor. One of them is the ability to cast with either hand. A student learns faster if the instructor can hold the student’s hand and take him or her through the stroke. A right-hander is not going to make the same motions when holding a left-hander’s hand. I suggest that you try to find a qualified instructor who is left-handed or can cast with either hand.

Failing that, try teaching him on the grass. By letting the line lie on the grass, he can stop at any time and analyze what is right and wrong.
