Penn has just introduced its new Live Liner series, the first American-made spinning reels with a special feature that allows the spool to turn freely while the bail remains stationary—ideal for fishing natural baits. Furthermore, the angler can dial in a precise free-spool tension setting to account for bait size, current speed and other variables. Once a fish has picked up the bait, a flip of the rear lever engages the main drag. Live Liners also feature a die-cast aluminum body, sideplate and rotor; an extra-large offset line roller; five stainless ball bearings; and a special elongated spool for long, tangle-free casts. The 5600L ($140) holds approximately 325 yrds. of 12 lb. test, while the 4600L ($140) holds 240 yrds. of 12 lb. test. Penn, Philadelphia, PA; (215) 229-9415. www.pennreels.com.
