Snook Slot May Go Up In Florida

|| |—| || |SQUEEZE PLAY: A total-length measurement law in Florida begins July 1. Photo: Barry & Cathy Beck| The Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) approved a total-length measurement regulation that goes into effect July 1. Anglers must measure snook from the most forward point of the head, with the mouth closed, to the farthest tip of the tail while it’s squeezed together. Since total-length measurement adds about 3¿¿4 inch, the FWC is expected to increase the limit to a 27- to 35-inch slot for the fall season. A final decision was not available at press time. www.myfwc.com

Red (blooded) Snapper Debate
The Texas Recreational Fishing Alliance has threatened to sue the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council to prevent an “individual quota system” from replacing the current red snapper law that lets commercial fishermen fish only the first ten days of each month during the season. The new system would break up the total allowable catch of red snapper among individual commercial fishermen, permitting each to catch a specific percentage of the yearly quota. www.rfatexas.org
