Winds are blowing in the Laguna Madre

Report from Port Mansfield, Texas

We awoke early at 5:00 am to set out in the Laguna Madre in search of trophy trout and bruiser redfish.  Stepping outside onto the deck at Get-A-Way Adventures Lodge didn’t seem promising – the wind was blowing an easy 30+ knots! We hopped aboard, and took the short boat ride to our first sandbar.  With Zara Spooks tied on, we began to pepper the edge of the bar.  Despite the wind, it didn’t take long before Pure Fishing’s Hunter Cole had a voracious surface strike from a keeper trout.  We released the fish and continued on.  Hunter popped another and another until finally, I got the monkey off my back by catching slot redfish.  The action continued on throughout the rest of the morning but came to a screeching halt by 12:00 pm.  We fished hard for another couple of hours with the occasional trout until finally  – the big blast came.  Hunter hooked up too and ended up releasing a more than respectable 26- inch trout. When we returned to the dock at Get-A-Way, everyone had a good day with lots of fish caught.  Brandon Shuler came strolling in and made us all look bad by reporting catching a half dozen redfish and more trout than he could count – including 4 fish that exceeded 25 inches.  Like myself and Hunter, most everyone had the best luck on top waters.
