Have you ever had a fish turn and run on you so fast that you couldn’t get your fingers out of the way in time? The result is usually busted knuckles, a broken leader or both.
To prevent such a mishap, Valentine Fly Reels introduces its new series of anti-reverse reels, the Planetary Plus, with a unique patented gear system. The most notable feature of this new gear system is the non-orbiting crank handle that positions itself at bottom dead center in all line-out situations to keep your knuckles and your leaders safe. Because this anti-reverse feature is completely independent of the drag, this configuration allows positive line retrieval even with little or no drag.
The mechanism behind it all, the patented Valentine Planetary Gear System, incorporates two gears — one mounted on the spool and the other fixed to the crank handle. Turning the crank handle engages the gears for retrieval. Letting go of the handle disengages the spool, but not the drag. It’s that simple.
The one-piece cage frame is precision machined from 6061-T6 aluminum alloy. The drag itself is a Delfin AF and stainless-steel disc system. Spool changes are simple, as is the conversion from right- to left-hand retrieve. This reel also features a selectable on/off line-out ratchet.
Currently, only the PL9 is available. This 3.5-inch diameter, 9.5-ounce reel designed for 8- to 10-weight lines comes in either black or cranberry-red-and-black; it includes a soft leather reel case with a nylon zipper. Each reel retails for $429, is individually numbered and registered, and carries a lifetime warranty. A larger version, the PL11, will be available this fall.
