Every once in a while you see something that makes you stop and do a double take, and CA Harris’ new line of Solitude reels is one of them.

From start to finish, the Harris Reel Co. engineered and built the Solitude series to deliver reliable performance under all environmental conditions – at a price any fly-fisher can afford.

The Solitude series reels come precision machined from aerospace-grade bar-stock aluminum, fit with stainless-steel parts and components, and equipped with a fade-free, cork/Teflon sandwich drag. Computer-controlled lathes machine both the frame and spool to 0.0005-inch tolerances. All other integral components are manufactured from 100-percent stainless steel. The rounded outer surface (a concept inspired by the basic design of protective armor on tanks and ships) has fewer edges and angles to ding or nick, and deflects blows from dropping to prevent exposing any raw aluminum to corrosion. And the computer-designed spherical frame delivers one of the highest strength-to-weight ratios in the industry.

The drag offers near infinite settings via one of the simplest, trouble-free disc-brake drag designs available. The result is almost no discernible start-up resistance and completely fade-free, smooth performance throughout the drag range – even when wet. What’s more, the entire system is fully enclosed in its own stainless-steel housing to resist dirt and moisture intrusion to ensure reliability.

Currently the Solitude series comes in reels from a 5.75-ounce II (5- to 6-weight) to an 8.75-ounce VI (12- to 13-weight) and is available in pewter, gold and black anodized finishes. The reels retail for between $225 and $360.
