Wind-on leaders lie at the heart of most heavy-tackle stand-up and chair fishing systems, and building them with monofilament and hollow braided line is simple and straightforward. Illustrated here is a wind-on leader used for giant bluefin tuna in Canada’s Maritime provinces. While this is a relatively complex configuration, the elements of construction are the same ones used in the simplest wind-on leader with the lightest tackle.
It’s important to match the size of the mono to the hollow braided line in order to obtain a reliable compression connection. The accompanying video details the construction of this compression connection.
