Pacific Swordfish Boats Banned to Protect Sea Turtles

In November, a federaljudge banned longline swordfish boats in a vast area of the PacificOcean north of Hawaii to protect dwindling numbers of sea turtlesfrom being accidentally hooked. The ban involves thousands ofsquare miles, and will remain in effect until the National MarineFish eries Ser vice completes a two-year study on the status ofthe turtles.

The ruling was hailed by recreational fishermen and environmentalgroups, but criticized by Hawaiian longliners. (USA Today)
