The fly reel is one of the most critical pieces of gear for chasing big fish in salt water. A permit in full run can spin a reel at 16,000 rpm, creating tremendous friction on drag surfaces, so just imagine what a 100-plus-pound sailfish or a big tuna can do to your reel. The newly redesigned** **Vortex V02 features a larger cork-to-rulon drag surface than many other big-game fly reels to ensure you can maintain control over your fish during extended fights. Yet it remains lightweight and holds 25 percent more backing than the original Vortex. New milling and porting on this reel decreases its weight by 20 percent. The reel also features a simpler spool release design so you won’t lose the retaining screw.

The Vortex V02 comes in four sizes, from the III to the VI, and covers line weights from 4 up to 13. The III weighs 6 3/8 ounces and measures 3 11/16 inches in diameter, while the VI weighs 11 15/16 ounces and measures 4½ inches in diameter. The reels retail for between $475 and $645, and extra spools are available for each size. The VO2 comes in gold and black anodized finishes.
