Deep Water Cay reports one its guests recently landed one of the biggest bonefish ever caught on fly in the Bahamas.

Fly angler Jim Easterling and guide Meko Glinton landed the 14.6-pounder on a custom-tied mantis shrimp fly on 12-pound tippet on a 7-weight Sage rod. They weighed the fish using a hand scale and safely released it.

“In 18 years of angling off the East End of Grand Bahama, I’ve never tracked a bonefish that size,” said Meko Glinton, a third generation bonefish guide at Deep Water Cay. “It was a proud moment in my career as a guide and a tremendous testament to our healthy fishery.”

The largest fly-caught Bahamas bonefish recorded by the International Game Fish Association is a 15-pounder caught in 1983 by James Orthwein, on 4-pound tippet.
