Pass the tag end under the line on your finger, under the first turn over the doubled-line loop. Wet the line and pull on the standing part of the leader and the double line. Trim the tag end, which should protrude at a 90-degree angle. Joe Mahler/joemahler.com

In the alternative finish, simply pull the tag end of the leader back through the end of the doubled section of the standing line, in the ­opposite direction you first entered it.
