Gaff a Fish: How to

Essential skills for every angler

Sink the gaff in the fish’s upper shoulder, just behind the gill plate. This controls the fish and minimizes damage to the meat. Then lift the fish and swing it over the gunwale in a single move. To gaff a spiraling fish, take your shot when it’s heading toward the boat. Keep the gaff behind the leader to prevent tangles and break-offs if you miss, or if the fish makes a last-minute dash.
