Tuna-chasers certainly know that trolling lures can be expensive. That’s why I began making homemade octopus skirt trolling lures for less than two bucks each. The components can be purchased at most tackle shops. -Darren Dorris What you’ll need:
6 feet of 50-pound-test leader material
1-ounce egg sinker
3/0 long-shank hook
90-pound barrel swivel
1 or 2 octopus skirts (colors of your choice)
non-stick cooking spray 1) Tie the 3/0 long-shank hook that would be used for bluefish to the end of the leader with the loop knot of your choice. If knot failure has you worried, the connection can also be crimped with one or two barrel sleeves. Darren Dorris

2) Slide the one-ounce egg sinker onto the leader, letting it rest at the knot above the hook. Thread the octopus skirt onto the leader and slide it down to the egg sinker. Darren Dorris

3) Coat the sinker with cooking spray and force it into the head of the skirt. You can also add a second skirt at this point to vary the colors. The hook bend should sit at the end of the skirt. Trim the skirt if it extends past the hook. Darren Dorris

4) Tie a barrel swivel on the leading end of the leader for easy attachment to a snap swivel on the main line. Darren Dorris
