Costa Rican Tackle Hints

Since the small planes that connect to Costa Rica’s Caribbean and Pacific coasts often have strict limitations on luggage size and weight, multi-piece rods are recommended.

I further reduce luggage weight and size by traveling with a Charlton configurable reel instead of taking along an assortment of different reels and lines. The unique Charlton design allows a fly fisher to convert, or “configure,” the reel to different species of fish (i.e., from sailfish to roosterfish) by simply exchanging one size of quick-change spool for another.

Additional space and weight can be saved by packing just a few nylon and cotton/nylon-blend shirts and pants. The quick-drying clothes can be washed every few days, thereby eliminating the need to travel with extra clothing.
