Shallow-water anglers looking for power options for high-tech skiffs need look no further than Tohatsu/Nissan’s new electronic fuel-injection 25- and 30-horsepower four-stroke outboard engines.

Both engines are the first in the industry to offer EFI on a batteryless, manual-start outboard motor. The EFI technology found on both outboards allows for quicker starts in all weather conditions, quieter operation, better acceleration and automatic adjustments in elevation changes. Conventional EFI models from other manufacturers must generate their power from the battery through the key switch. Tohatsu/Nissan’s system differs in that it receives its voltage directly from the alternator, allowing the engine to be started by either the pull rope or the electric starter. Both the Tohatsu/Nissan 25- and 30-horsepower engines come with the rope start as standard equipment on all electric-start models.

The CD ignition system on the 25 and 30 is specially designed for immediate starting in all sea and weather conditions. Depending on models, both outboards come with either a manual gas-assist tilt or a power trim-and-tilt system. Both engines are available in 15- and 20-inch shaft lengths to accommodate a variety of shallow-water craft.

Cross-flow induction on both models provides optimum power, and the three-cylinder system offers a smooth ride. In addition, the engines are good on gas; the 25-horsepower model uses 2.4 gallons per hour at 5,500 rpm, while the 30-horsepower sips a miserly 2.6 gallons per hour.

Tohatsu/Nissan’s 25- and 30-horsepower four-strokes also feature a number of safety devices, including an oil-pressure alert light, an audible oil-pressure and overheat warning system and an over-rev limiter at 6,300 rpm, as well as an overheat sensor and an oil-pressure sensor that limit rpm to 2,800 when a problem occurs.

Additionally, all Tohatsu/Nissan four-stroke models come with a three-year limited warranty.

Both brands offer outboards from 2 to 115 horsepower. The 40- to 115-horsepower models use Tohatsu’s TLDI (Two-stroke Low-pressure Direct-Injection) technology. The 2- through 30-horsepower models utilize four-stroke technology.
