Q: Fishermen are aware that the fly has more action if attached to a loop knot. This is especially so with surface flies such as popping bugs and Crease flies. I have been asked many times: “What is the best loop knot?”
A: I believe there are four requirements for a good loop knot: It should be very strong. It should be easy to adjust to the desirable size. It should have the tag end projecting toward the fly. You should be able to make it with all sizes of monofilament or braided wire for a bite leader.
The nonslip mono loop fits all of these requirements. Tied correctly in mono, it has almost 100 percent line strength. It’s easy to create the desired loop size. Larger loops tend to gather grass, etc., sometimes fouling the hook when casting. It doesn’t gather debris during a retrieve because the tag end projects toward the fly.
