Q: What fly line is best for all-around saltwater use if you are targeting fish like tarpon and reds? There are so many fly lines on the market today it drives me crazy! What do you suggest?

A: Fly line selection is always a personal choice. I prefer Scientific Anglers’ GPX line – it’s a weight-forward floating type, a half-size heavier than the standard line weight. Of course, nearly all the manufacturers make good lines, and many of them produce a similar line in a similar taper to this one. Just remember: The most important thing for maximizing any fly line’s performance is to keep it clean.
