Q: I’ve been wondering why it is so hard to find lines that balance rods perfectly. What are your thoughts on this? If they made lines in half-weight increments, would that help?

A: Every fly rod I have cast in the past few years could easily handle three line sizes (one lighter and one heavier than the recommended size). I believe the length of line being false-cast and the type of fly the line transports vary so much that a perfectly tuned rod would only be so at a specific casting distance and with flies of particular weight and air resistance.
