Well, after a short flight I arrived at Grand Slam Lodge in Punta Allen, Mexico (www.grandslamfishinglodge.com). First off – what a great place. The lodge has only been opened since December of 2010 but as smooth as the operations are, it seems like it’s been open for many years. Manager Bobby Settles has put all the right guides in place and has developed a lodge that is a dream for hardcore anglers but is also perfectly enjoyable for wives and kids. Unfortunately, the wind is howling and the clouds are thick. Fortunately, that didn’t stop guide Tomas Hernandez from finding fish. Just after we came off plane, we were instructed to jump out of the boat to pursue tailing bones only yards away. The remainder of the morning was spent peppering the mangrove shoreline for snook and we managed to find one that had a voracious appetite for a white bunny strip fly. After a quick bite for lunch, we searched for permit and we found them. There were a handful of times where the presentation looked absolutely perfect but then again, we were fishing for permit and we just couldn’t get an eat. Tomorrow is another day and we are all hopeful that we will awake with blue skies and light winds. Stay tuned for more from Grand Slam Fishing Lodge.
