Following NOAA’s announcement that the recreational fishing season for red snapper in Gulf of Mexico federal waters will consist of only nine days for a second consecutive year, Alabama state officials said the season in Alabama state waters will last 66 days in 2016. During the longer Alabama season, which will extend from May 27 through July 31, anglers will be allowed to fish for red snapper no more than nine miles from shore (state waters).

To make matters more confusing, Gulf red snapper season for charter boats (boats taking paying customers) in federal waters will lasts 46 days, extending from June 1 through July 17. Charter boats are not allowed to partake of the longer Alabama state season.
