Veteran skipper lost in Montauk boating tragedy

Capt. John DiMaio was fishing nearby with his Vivianne and answered Cody's May Day calls, but wasn't able to save McMillan in time.

Marty McMillan (51) of Wantagh, N.Y. a veteran offshore fisherman, died on Nov. 30 after being dragged over the side of his 30-foot private boat while fishing for blackfish 12 miles east of Montauk. His anchor got tangled with lobster pot lines, and in the course of trying to clear it McMillan’s foot became entangled in loose anchor line on the deck. His son, Cody (17), tried to rescue the drowning skipper, but anchor line got angled in the prop. Capt. John DiMaio was fishing nearby with his Vivianne and answered Cody’s May Day calls, but wasn’t able to save McMillan in time.
