Tyler Wald trailered his Mako 18 Pro Skiff to Tampa Bay to meet-up and fish with Brent Schirmer for a three-day adventure targeting two of the region’s signature species—redfish and gag grouper. The redfish bite proved tough, with blown-out water, stingrays, catfish, and summer storms testing their patience. Cut bait on docks and mangrove edges attracted little more than a nuisance bite, but persistence paid off when Tyler connected with a 29-inch redfish, a personal best and fitting payoff after days of frustration. At the Skyway Bridge, the team switched gears, dropping pinfish and threadfin over rock piles and channel edges for gag grouper. Hookups came fast but so did break-offs, with sharks and dolphins adding to the chaos. Still, several healthy gags came boat-side, underscoring the bay’s reputation as a premier inshore grouper fishery.

Brent Schirmer is a content creator based in Tampa Bay, Florida.
