Even careful anglers can be caught without bait during a hot bite, and artificial lures don’t always work. If the bait shop is closed, head for the local supermarket. The grocery store is home to a wide variety of salt water baits, including canned kernel corn, cooked rice, frozen and fresh squid, fresh chowder clams, mussels, butterfish and mackerel. A real bargain is fish-flavored cat food, which normally contains a lot of ground-up menhaden – which may be what you’re looking for at the a bait shop in the first place!
