Scientists Rank Bottom Trawls Most Destructive

Research presented at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) indicated that bottom trawling (dragging) is the most damaging form of commercial fishing. The scientists cited the bycatch of non-target species and habitat destruction as two reasons for its ranking, which was part of a study that documented and ranked the ecological impact of all commercial fishing-gear types.
