CCA opposes flawed IFQ program

Dead turtles and excessive bycatch highlight serious problems with Gulf grouper bottom longline fishery

The National Marine Fisheries Service and the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council are proceeding with a management program for the Gulf grouper fishery that ignores research indicating that longline gear is killing large numbers of endangered sea turtles. Additionally, the proposed management program is similar to one used in the red snapper fishery that is unexpectedly resulting in excessive dead discards and increased wasteful bycatch.

In light of these developments, Coastal Conservation Association needs your help to notify the Gulf Council that you disapprove of proceeding with this management program until these serious problems have been addressed.
