Louisiana refuge closes due to hurricanes

Effective immediately the Shell Keys National Wildlife Refuge, located some 3 ½ miles south of Marsh Island, is closed to all public access and recreational use.

The Refuge – one of the oldest in the system and presently consisting of only one barren islet at 29.43* N 91.85*W – is a very popular venue for speck fishermen. Status on the closure, which was caused by the effects of hurricanes Gustav and Ike, can be determined by phoning 337-598-2216.
