Tired of never seeming to have a trash bag handy, I decided to retrofit a nylon-mesh chum bag. I lined the opening with a length of old garden hose enclosed in foam pipe insulation and secured it with nylon wire-ties. When anchored, we hang the bag off a cleat over the side as a trash bag. The mesh prevents cans from scratching and the trash stays put.
