Earlier this summer the native from the Bronx in New York City caught a 621/2-pound striped bass on conventional tackle spooled with 50-pound line. Mon-talvo caught his monster bass in Long Island Sound, but unfortunately even a 60-plus-pounder is still too small to nab the state record in New York. Bob Rocchetta’s 76-pound bass caught in 1981 tops the record books. Still, Montalvo’s striped bass has garnered its fair share of attention. “I’m like a mini celebrity here,” he said. “People ask me about the fish all the time. I’ve even signed a few autographs.”
