New spotted seatrout record spotlights Mississippi angling

The 10-pound, 7.66-ounce fish breaks a 35-year-old record

After a 10 year quest, it took Eric Quave of Biloxi only 10 minutes to land an eye-popping 10-pound, 7.66-ounce spotted seatrout that eclipsed the former record - a 10-pound, six-ouncer - that had stood for 35 years.

Quave is a "big fish hunter," catching 38 trout weighing more than 8 1/2 pounds during that 10-year run.

The big trout was caught near the Gulfport Small Craft Harbor on May 13 on a live sand trout suspended under a popping cork.

The catch, weighed by the Department of Marine Resources, will be certified at the next meeting of the Commision of Marine Resources.
