Northwest anglers have known about Trophy Sportfishing Boats for years. With the recent introduction of the 2902 Walkaround model, however, the rest of the country is bound to take notice. That’s because the 2902 remains true to its sport fishing purpose without sacrificing the creature comforts appreciated on overnight stays.

“This all-new coastal fishing platform combines a soft, dry ride with a deep, functional cockpit and well-planned cabin at an exceptional value,” says Trophy Senior Vice President Dave Taylor. “The result is a rock-solid fishing machine that takes big water in stride, while providing everything that anglers need to do what they do best safely and comfortably.”

The 2902 is the largest model in the Trophy lineup, and is very angler-friendly. The full walkaround design allows maneuverability around the bow, while the cambered deck drains quickly. Standard cockpit coaming pads can be removed for easy cleanup. The large transom with walk-through door is equipped with a 30-gallon lighted live well, plus a removable cutting board and 25-quart cooler. Twin 33-gallon fishboxes in the deck drain overboard, and a convenient fresh water sink is located behind the helm seat. The transom also incorporates a large storage compartment, with more dry storage located behind the passenger seat. Rod holders and racks are standard, while outriggers can be added as an option.

The 2902’s Trophy Hull System design incorporates a deep-vee bow for a soft entry and rough-water performance. A 19-degree transom deadrise and angled strakes enhance lateral stability and tracking, as I discovered during our test in four-foot seas. Our test boat, powered by a pair of 225-hp Mercury four-stroke outboards, easily handled the real-world conditions. Top speed was a respectable 44.5 mph, with a noise level of only 91 decibels at that speed. Factory tests with these same engines recorded a 24-gph fuel burn at a cruising speed of 33.9 mph, which equals a range of 241 nautical miles with the 218-gallon tank.

¿ SPECIFICATIONS LOA: 31′ 5″ Beam: 9′ 9″ Draft: 2′ 6″ Weight: 7,934 lbs. Deadrise: 19 ¿ Water: 30 gals. Fuel: 218 gals. Base price w/ twin 225-hp Mercury four-stroke outboards: $98,698

Standard power is twin 225-hp Mercury EFI outboards; besides the four-strokes, OptiMax engines are also available. All mount to an Armstrong bracket featuring two internal stainless-steel supports tied into the fiberglass stringer system for structural integrity. The bracket comes with a retractable boarding ladder. Recessed trim tabs and hydraulic steering are standard.

Addressing comfort needs during long runs offshore, the 2902 features adjustable helm and companion pedestal seats with molded footrests and aft-facing jump-seats.

The spacious step-down cabin is entered via a lockable pocket door. When it’s time for a break in the action, the convertible dinette and galley with alcohol stove, sink and icebox make it simple to grab a quick meal. The dinette lowers to create a large vee-berth, and there is also a mid-berth under the entry stairs. An enclosed head with fiberglass liner and pump-out head is standard. Storage for tackle and other gear is plentiful throughout. The interior is well-lit by four portholes, a cabin hatch and overhead lighting.

A Sunbrella Bimini top is standard, but the optional extended fiberglass hardtop is worth the extra money, since it comes with an overhead electronics box and rocket launcher. Besides the hardtop, most major options are included in two package deals. The Pro Pac includes a fresh water pressure system with head and transom showers, a Lewmar windlass, VHF radio, raw and fresh water washdowns, and a bait-station cooler. The Dockside Accessory Package adds an electric element to the galley alcohol stove, dual-voltage refrigerator, six-gallon water heater and 30-amp battery-charger converter.

“With so many practical features and its solid design, the 2902 Walkaround is a serious sport fisherman that will provide years of safe, reliable fishing at a great price,” Taylor says. But don’t take his word for it; take a test ride on the 2902 and judge for yourself.
