High water and a little dumb courage can either get you into trouble or get you some great fishing!! We've had lots of high water for more than two months now and you have to be courageous and a little lucky when making these long shallow runs to get into good sight fishing. If you mess up, it is a very long walk home. Two days ago I was guiding one of my old time friends and clients Jeff Galen, a very competent fly fisher. We started out on the most western flats of the Lower Laguna Madre up against the mainland. We struck out and just could not connect. We had a little discussion and decided to make the run across the bay and head for the east side to a place I like to call the Little Bahamas mon!! It is awesome, if you didn't know better you would swear you were in the Bahamas. Crystal clear water, little grass, hard bottom, and only 8-18" deep. Perfect conditions for sight fishing anywhere, but we were on the Lower Laguna Madre hunting redfish. They were there but it was a difficult situation. Super spooky and big. We had about 20 shots and got 5 in the 6-8lb. range. If it stays dry, the water should start to drop and the Little Bahamas will get a rest from my Hell's Bay (The Ses Whore) and me bothering them on a regular basis. Ha!! But with the drop in water levels, the fish should start to take up residence in their usual haunts. Give me a call and let's go bother some fish!
