Reader Tips: Protect Your Threads

Reinforce your jig threads with this technique

I use a variety of bucktail jigs when fishing offshore, and the biggest failure point I have noticed in all jigs — cheap and name-brand — is the thread that secures the skirt to the head. Toothy critters can take their toll, so I devised a quick process that greatly extends the life of a jig. First, apply a generous coating of super glue to the thread wrap, letting it soak in. Then wrap thin strips of colored PVC electrical tape over the thread. Finally, coat the tape with PVC glue, which fuses the tape and creates a tough shell around the wrap.
