On a recent trip to the Pacific side of Panama, I got to fish again with two of my favorite fishing companions: George Large of Yo-Zuri Lures, and Carter Andrews, of Islas Secas Lodge in Panama’s Gulf of Chiriqui. Andrews invited Large and me down to sample the yellowfin tuna fishing on surface poppers around the famed Hannibal Bank, and nearby Montuosa Island.

Along with about 900 other friends, fans and family, I attended the memorial service for Jose Wejebe last Sunday at the IGFA museum and headquarters in Dania Beach, Florida. As many of you know, Wejebe was killed in the crash of his own private airplane in southwest Florida on Friday, April 6.

The NOAA Fisheries Service has eliminated the 240-foot (40-fathom) snapper-grouper prohibition in South Atlantic federal waters. This Draconian prohibition made illegal the possession of six deepwater snapper-grouper species (snowy grouper, blueline tilefish, yellowedge grouper, misty grouper, queen snapper, and silk snapper) in or from the South Atlantic federal waters in water deeper than 240 feet.
Those of you who’ve read my blog before likely know that I anticipate tarpon season each winter much the same as a kid anticipates the arrival of Christmas. Other worldly concerns typically grind to a halt (ok, maybe they slow down a little) as May and June approach, because there’s a short window of opportunity to encounter this manificent fish here in the Florida Keys, and I want to get in on as much of the action as possible.
The 2012 ICAST tackle show is underway in Orlando and the theme so far seems to be innovations in spinning reels. Lightweight designs with powerful drags abound as reel manufacturers keep bringing new models designed specifically for braided line to the market. Where spinning tackle was once thought to be reserved exclusively for light tackle situations and relatively small fish, nowadays more and more huge fish are being landed on spinners.
