I got a chance to fish the Redbone Celebrity Tournament series here in Islamorada last week. If you’re not familiar with the Redbone, it’s a series of saltwater tournaments created with one purpose in mind: To raise money for cystic fibrosis research. The tournaments were created in 1988 by Gary and Susan Ellis of Islamorada, after learning their daughter, Nicole, had the disease when she was very young.

Every so often, we receive a letter or e-mail from a U.S. Soldier stationed somewhere around the world, usually overseas, and often in a combat zone like Iraq or Afghanistan. As might be expected, these young men and women crave things that remind them of home and their normal lives, and apparently, fishing is one of the things they desire to recall the most.

Christmas is now three days away, and like many men, I’m just now beginning to think about Christmas shopping. No need to rush into things, I always say. Plenty of time left.My wife always gets great gifts from me at Christmastime, things like rods, reels, cast nets and all sorts of useful items. She’s actually very good natured about my shopping habits, although she has been bringing up that trip to Paris thing again lately.

Every so often, it’s good to try something new in terms of how and where we fish. We all tend to fall into angling ruts from time to time, and branching out to search for new species, or try something completely different, can refresh our fishing perspective in a positive way. I had such an experience recently, not with my own angling adventures, but with a couple of friends.

Contender had long been known as a builder of serious offshore fishing boats, but they threw the fishing world a curve ball at the Miami Boat Show this year by introducing a full-on bay boat. The 25-footer features a stepped hull and is said to reach speeds over 70 mph with a f300 Yamaha. It's a bold and innovative move, one that's sure to prove popular with the boat buying public.

At this year's Miami International Boat Show -- currently underway at the Miami Beach Convention Center -- we attended a press conference put on today by Pursuit Boats. At the press conference Pursuit did not introduce a new model boat but instead introduced a new concept in ways to fund research for breast cancer science. They showed us a boat wrapped in a blue and pink wrap depicting a pink mermaid swimming through blue sparkling water. This mermaid signifies Pursuit's commitment to donate money from every boat sold at the Miami show to breast cancer research at Johns Hopkins University.

The annual Miami International Boat Show took place last week, and as usual, it was a whirlwind of press conferences, new product introductions, cocktail parties and more. It’s also the place where I run into a ton of old friends, people I typically only see at that show, a great time for reconnecting and sharing stories from the past - mostly fishing tales from one place or another.
