Farewell to Jose

Capt. Jose Wejebe (left) with Costa Del Mar’s Al Perkinson

Along with about 900 other friends, fans and family, I attended the memorial service for Jose Wejebe last Sunday at the IGFA museum and headquarters in Dania Beach, Florida. As many of you know, Wejebe was killed in the crash of his own private airplane in southwest Florida on Friday, April 6.

Wejebe was a talented Key West guide long before becoming one of the most famous saltwater television fishing personalities through his Spanish Fly show. I first met Jose in the early 1990s, possibly through a Shimano event in Key West. I can’t recall the exact circumstance of how we met.

At the service, many close friends and business associates of Jose’s spoke of their years of friendship, of great fishing days, but mostly of the man himself, of his charm, irreverant sense of humor, and his great humility and approachability.

In many ways, Wejebe became so popular because he was someone that almost everyone could relate to on one level or another, an Everyman if you will. He always exuded a positive attitude, lived life on his own terms, and was the kind of guy you felt like you’d known your entire life almost as soon as you met him. Capt. Steve Huff, one of the Florida Keys’ most renowned flats guides may have summed it up best during his eulogy of Jose when he said, “Just seeing him walking down the dock toward you would always lift your spirits.”

Wejebe and I became friends over the years, although I never fished with him until a few short years ago, when we put together a trip to Key West with SWS staff and the folks from Costa Del Mar. It was late May and we were going sailfishing, not exactly prime season. It was flat clam and we had trouble catching bait. Before we knew it, noon had arrived and we were baitless.

“Don’t worry, Bro, I know a guy,” he said. We ran by boat to a waterfront section of Key West called Key Haven, where we searched several canals for Jose’s bait connection’s house ( he wasn’t exactly sure where the guy lived), but we eventually found it, at 1:00 pm. We bought a few goggleyes and headed offshore.

About 10 miles out, a slight color change appeared, and we stopped to put out baits. We hadn’t been there 10 minutes when the first sailfish showed up. Jose seemed totally unfazed by the fact that we had struggled so hard for bait all morning, only making it offshore well after noon, in the wrong time of year, in less than ideal conditions, and yet, there we were, hooked up.

We caught seven sailfish in three hours, and then everyone jumped in the ocean for a quick Gulf Stream swim before heading in. Business as usual for Wejebe, who in addition to being all of the things mentioned above, was one hell of a fisherman.

The fishing world has lost one of its most unique individuals and brightest stars. Lots of us will miss him, but long after the sadness wanes, we will still have those memories which will bring smiles to our faces and occasionally cause us to laugh out loud, for the rest of our lives. Perhaps that will be Jose’s most enduring legacy.

The fishing world will not be the same without Jose in it. He was my favorite TV show host for all the years. I had the good fortune to meet and have lunch with him and our mutual friend, Corbett Davis, a couple years ago in the keys. You would have thought he had know me for years. Most down to earth and truly NICE guy I ever met. I was even more impressed with Jose after spending a couple hours over a great lunch with him. He Leaves all with great memories.

I wish I could have had the privilege to fish with Jose. I have been studying his methods and tips for years and faithfully watched Spanish Fly . I had hoped to bring that spirit and enthusiasm to my team in the years to come. If our team makes it to tournament this year off the east coast and even catches one, it will be dedicated to the man who I thought personified knowledge , skill, and a great personality. He will be greatly missed. God Speed Jose and my deepest heartfelt condolences to your family.

JOSE WEJEBE, OH WHAT A GUY,
KNOWN OF BY MANY, AS JUST "SPANISH FLY"

HE WAS KIND, GENEROUS, SOFT SPOKEN AND MORE,
WHEN JOSE WAS AROUND LIFE WAS NEVER A BORE.

GOD TOOK HIM HOME, MOST WILL ASK "WHY"
CAUSE GOD NEEDED "THE BEST GUIDE EVER" AT HIS FISHIN HOLE IN THE SKY

Jose will be greatly missed. We always enjoyed his show and, as Carolinians who formerly lived in Key West, we also appreciated his concern for preserving one of our favorite places. Thank you for you very fine tribute, and wonderful anecdotes.

I Can't believe it. I just found out surfing my email, and now I'm weeping over my computer as I type. God bless Jose's soul, and blessings for his family and close friends. I'm sure you still have that great big contagious grin on your face in Heaven my bro. I'm sure theres plenty of bait there, so tight lines my friend.

I am very sad, very very sad.... We lost one of our best anglers who will never be matched. I hope when I breathe my last breath I will have long conversations throughout eternity with Jose and other fishermen who are our friends.

It was a shock to hear of this tragic loss. We have always enjoyed and looked forward to seeing Jose on his fishing shows here in the North East. Although we never meet it obvious that he was a person with a warm hearth with a love of the outdoors. My deepest sympathy goes out to his family and friends.

The fishing community will miss Jose. He loved fishing and he was a good steward of the sea. I loved his show and I practice his respect for the sea and all of it's creatures. I feel that Jose
must have been a GOOD MAN. I would've liked to have known him.

"Only the good die young," Billy Joel. Great man, great entertainer, great fisherman and great show. My kids and I often enjoy "Spanish Fly." They grew up watching the program and would come running when they heard the theme song too watch with me. For many of us who have to hang up our rods for winter, your show was an escape from the winter blues. Saturday and Sunday morning we would tune it to watch. In a way we have memories watching you fish as well as the memories we have from fishing and thanks for that. Your a cool dude. God is lucky to have you even though we are sad to loose you. Tight lines in eternity and god bless your family.

I will miss Jose for his fishing but also for his love of music. It was great listening to blues with him at the Green Parrot. Hook Um Up, Bill Slaughter

One of my favorite fishing shows. His excitement for all types of fishing was contagious and inspired me to try types of fishing that I had never done. Obviously a real nice guy who loved his daughter.

Gone Fishin
God Grant that I may live to fish
Until My Dying Day
And when it comes to my last cast
I then most Humbly Pray
When in the lords
great landing Net
I'm peacefully asleep
That in his mercy
I be judged
Big enough to keep

God bless you Jose
