World Governments Agree to End Overfishing

The World Summit agreed last summer to end overfishing of the planet’s oceans by 2015. The agreement could have far-reaching implications for fishing fleets and marine biodiversity the world over and was among the first concrete deals negotiated by national delegations in Johannesburg, Republic of South Africa. The governments in attendance agreed to “maintain and restore (fish) stocks to levels that can produce maximum sustainable yields, with the aim of achieving these goals for depleted stocks on an urgent basis and where possible not later than 2015.”
