Silver Carp Come to Louisiana

The Times-Picayune reports big schools of silver carp hit Delacroix, Hopedale

Silver carp, an invasive species that have the potential to cause enormous damage to native species have appeared in the Delacroix and Hopedale area of Louisiana, according to the Times-Picayune.

Silver carp feed on plankton required by larval fish and native mussels, according to the United States Department of Agriculture, the organisms that comprise the bottom of the food chain and directly affect the health of sport fish populations. In addition their propensity to leap from the water when disturbed creates a hazard to boaters.

Capt. Charlie Thomason took out a client last Friday morning in Four Horse Lake and caught a 38-inch carp on a live shrimp.

“There were at least 60 in the school,” Thomason said.

Just the day before, Brian Epstein, a former Delacroix guide, had heard reports of big schools of silver carp in the area, so he headed out in search of them, and unfortunately, found them, writes The Times-Picayune.

“I got more than I bargained for,” Epstein said. “I took one square in the chest.”
