Stu Apte, world famous fly and light tackle angler, invites you to join him to experience the excitement of fishing the prolific waters near Golfito, Costa Rica. The First Annual Stu Apte Fly Fishing Sailfish Tournament will be held February 1-2-3, 2006, at the lovely Golfito Sailfish Rancho. Nestled at the base of a jungle waterfall, the lodge sits on its own private beach, where the only noise you hear is the soothing sound of the surf and the occasional cry of a rain forest animal. Golfito Sailfish Rancho will host all of the tournament social events and will serve as tournament headquarters. At this writing we have fifteen teams signed up to fish. Capt. Rick Murphy and his crew from Sportsman’s Adventures, the number one rated fishing show on Sun Sports, will be on hand to film the tournament for Sun Sport Network.
Anglers will fish two-person teams, one team per boat. Each boat each day will have an observer assigned according to a boat draw. Only twenty pound (10kg) tippet will be allowed and will be furnished by the tournament. The entry fee for this event is $600.00 per team. We are limiting participation to twenty teams. This is an all-release competition. Trophies and first class, quality merchandise will be given to the top three teams competing in this event. The top three anglers will also be awarded prizes. This event is a qualifying tournament for the Rolex/IGFA Offshore Championship.
The Stu Apte Fly Fishing Sailfish Tournament is a conservation oriented event developed to promote sport fishing and raise funds for the Costa Rica Sport Fishing Association. This organization was founded in January of 2005 with the goal of promoting the conservation of billfish in Costa Rica. Participation in this premier event will assist us in supporting this project to protect the future of sport fishing in Costa Rica.
We are offering lodging/boat charter packages to interested participants at several lodges in the Golfito region. We have boats available for charter ranging in size from 28′ to 41′. Marina facilities are also available in Golfito. We welcome private boats and will assist in finding dockage.
