Photo: Bill Roecker| The Independence, a long-range sportfishing boat out of San Diego, returned from an 18-day trip in January with 82 yellowfin tuna weighing 200 pounds or morea new single-trip record, trumping the previous best of 79 200-pounders. It didn’t hurt to have old salts like Mitsuyoshi “Beans” Sogioka onboard: The 86-year-old caught six 200-pounders. When asked about his secret, Beans replied, “I used sardines.”
