trini tarpon
The Trini Tarpon Tournament, now in its second year as an annual event in Chaguaramas, Trinidad, is this year scheduled for July 27 through July 31.
This release-tournament format demands the live weighing of big fish for bonus release points, which allows them to be released alive and healthy to grow, propagate and fight another day. The tournament also supports the Bonefish Tarpon Trust and has been integral in that organization’s Southern Caribbean tagging program.
Local charter boats are already catching monster fish. Captain Nick Telfer recently released a tarpon measuring 87-inches fork length with a 53-inch girth. These measurements, calculated through a standard formula, put the fish’s weight at almost 300 pounds.
There is still time for anglers looking to get into the action and register to fish this incredible fishery during a fun-filled, conservation-driven event.
