Dock Runs Aground Washington Beach

The dock is likely debris from the Japanese tsnumai in 2011.

A mysterious dock that washed ashore Washington’s remote Olympic Peninsula looks just like the one that came ashore an Oregon beach last summer, suggesting it’s another piece of tsunami debris from Japan, says John Chapman, an assistant professor of fisheries at Oregon State University.

The Washington dock found earlier this month has the same dimensions as the one found near Newport, Ore. “It was identical so far as we could tell,” said Chapman. The Washington Ecology Department said nearly 30 species on the dock have been identified. None poses a high risk of becoming invasive.

Efforts to trace and confirm the origin of the Washington dock have not yet been successful. The Coast Guard spotted it Dec. 18 on a remote stretch of wilderness beach on the northwestern tip of Washington.
