The 49th annual Marathon International Bonefish Tournament is set for Thursday through Sunday, Sept. 25-28, in the area known as the “Heart of the Keys.”
The popular family-friendly tournament is a favorite of locals and visitors. The entry fee is only $195 per angler and more than 25 awards and prizes are to be presented.
Registration is to open at 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25, at Frosty’s Restaurant and Tiki Bar, 725 11th St. at mile marker 47 oceanside. All social activities are to take place at Frosty’s.
A cocktail party is to follow the registration at 5:30 p.m.
Fishing runs from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Friday through Sunday.
A 5:30 p.m. cocktail party is scheduled after fishing Friday and Saturday. Sunday’s cocktails are set for 6:30 p.m., to be followed by an awards dinner at 7:30 p.m.
Tournament organizers and local guides set the fishing dates to avoid extreme low tides so anglers can stalk bonefish on the flats.
Anglers can use spin or fly gear. Three line-test classes have been established with different point awards: 100 points for bonefish caught on 6-pound line or tippet, 75 points for bonefish caught on 8-pound line or tippet and 50 points for bonefish caught on 10-pound line or tippet.
Individual and team grand champion awards are to go to the top point-getters in each division. The travelers’ trophy awaits the out-of-county angler who accumulates the most points.
Men’s and women’s, permit, new contestant, wet pants (individual and team) for wade-fishing points, and grand slam (bonefish, permit and tarpon) are just some of the other trophies and awards to at stake.
