The purpose of the tournament is to promote sustainability, conservation and sound management of mako sharks and other apex predators.

Bowman Bluewater and Ichthyo-Sys fishing products are pleased to announce the fourth annual Flying Mako catch and release fly fishing tournament, to be held in San Diego, California on July 20, 2012. This year’s event will be hosted by On The Fly Fishing Charters

The purpose of the tournament is to promote sustainability, conservation and sound management of mako sharks and other apex predators.

Proceeds from this unique charitable event will be donated principally to the Pfleger Institute of Environmental Research (http://www.pier.org), a 501(c)(3) charity, in support of their scientific research on shortfin mako sharks (Isurus oxyrinchus). Final accounting of all receipts and expenditures will be provided to sponsors and tournament participants.

Mako sharks are one of the world’s top gamefish. They are world-renowned for their aggressiveness and wild acrobatics when hooked. Highly visible when enticed within casting range, mako sharks readily take flies near the surface, and provide great photo and video opportunities both in and out of the water during their frequent aerial displays!

The waters off San Diego provide a unique opportunity to fly-fish for these incredible game fish. The Pacific Ocean off Southern California is a nursery for juvenile mako sharks, providing an abundant supply of fly-rod sized fish ranging from 10 to 250 lbs.

The Flying Mako tournament will enforce a strict catch-and-release policy for all sharks hooked and fought to the boat. Barbless hooks are required. For obvious reasons, participants are not allowed to lift sharks out of the water!!

The $250 team entry fee includes a Tournament Reception and charity auction at the end of the day.

Winners will have their names engraved on a plaque on the perpetual Flying Mako™ Tournament trophy housed at the San Diego Fly Shop (www.sandiegoflyshop.com).

Teams may use their own boats, or book prospective Captains separate from the entry fee. Interested teams should sign up early, as slots and potential guides knowledgeable in finding and catching mako sharks out of Mission Bay, California are limited.
