DNREC’s Division of Fish and Wildlife has confirmed a new state record in the Delaware Sport Fishing Tournament: a 56.9-pound dolphin caught on July 6.

William D. “Butch” Emmert of Rehoboth Beach caught the fish, while trolling a ballyhoo lure. He was fishing in 60 fathoms at the tip of the Baltimore Canyon on the Elizabeth Jane with Captain Jason King. The catch is recognized as a Delaware record since the fish was caught from a boat out of and returning to a Delaware port.

The record catch was initially confirmed by Fish and Wildlife Enforcement agent Sr. Cpl. Casey Zolper and verified at Hook ‘Em and Cook ‘Em in Bethany Beach.
