The ICOM IC-M802 Digital Marine SSB does triple duty as a single-sideband radio, a powerful ham radio and an e-mail conduit. The unit’s remote head measures 8 1/2″ wide by 4 1/2″ high by 3 1/2″ deep. A black box mounts out of sight and connects to a GPS, a personal computer and an e-mail modem as well as a matching external speaker. The single-sideband radio has 150 watts of output power and comes programmed with 242 international and domestic duplex ship-to-shore channels, 72 international and domestic ship-to-ship channels, 662 international and domestic data duplex channels and 160 user-programmable “favorite frequency” channels. The IC-M802 has Digital Selective Calling (DSC) capability that meets Global Marine Distress Safety System (GMDSS) Category E guidelines and may be used for routine calls to any CMDSS-equipped vessel nearby.
