There are many excellent fly rods at affordable prices these days, and now Ross Reels follows suit, making a notable foray into that market with the Cimarron Large Arbor.

The Cimarron is one of Ross’ oldest and best-selling models, and the new large-arbor version retains some noticeable hallmarks of its predecessor – especially durability. The CLA incorporates the company’s newest and strongest friction-based Delrin disc drag design for a smooth startup and consistent stopping power across all settings. The large-arbor configuration increases retrieval rate, but Ross also varies the widths of each reel so that backing capacity is not limited. The CLA is fully machined from 6061-T6 aircraft-quality aluminum, which undergoes a proprietary process that strengthens the metal and results in a more durable type of anodization. The reels easily convert from right- to left-hand retrieve.

Ross manufactures the CLA entirely in the USA and now offers it in smaller sizes, including the #3 which will hold a weight-forward 7-weight fly line and 150 yards of backing. This reel weighs 5.55 ounces and retails for $190, with spare spools available for $99. All reels come in a black or slate-gray anodized finish, and larger models will follow this fall.
