An innovative Web-based service, 406Link pairs with an emergency position indicating radio beacon via that device’s test mode to allow the deployment of a non-emergency text message from any 406 MHz EPIRB or personal locator beacon (PLB) to let family and friends know that you’re OK. The Web link utilizes the GEOSAR satellite system to relay the preconfigured message with reliability and coverage that far exceed those of cell-phone communication. Once a personal account is set up on 406link.com, the EPIRB or PLB triggers an e-mail “I’m OK” message that’s sent to five recipients whenever the test function is activated. Basic service is $39.95 per year; enhanced service plans generate current lat/lons with the check-in message for $59.95 a year. www.406link.com
