Salmon Stock Skyrockets
Thanks to improvements in water quality and reductions of ocean and inland harvests, the number of endangered winter-run chinook salmon are up to more than 15,000, the highest since 1981, according to the California Department of Fish & Game. www.dfg.ca.gov
New Year, New Rules
Virginia has made some changes to the annual Salt Water Fishing Tournament for 2006. The changes include:
Allowing commercial fishermen with a hook-and-line license, who are on a recreational fishing trip, to participate.
Adding albacore with a minimum weight of 40 pounds to the list of eligible species. www.mrc.state.va.us
Bonefish Abound off Florida
Between Miami and the Marquesas Keys, there are about 329,000 bonefish, according to the annual count completed by Bonefish and Tarpon Unlimited and the University of Miami. The numbers, up from last year, indicate a stable population. www.tarbone.org
