Department of Interior to Manage Fisheries?

September 2004

A bill introduced in Congress would move the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) out of the Department of Commerce and over to the Department of the Interior. Congressman Jim Saxton (R-New Jersey), along with co-sponsor Don Young (R-Alaska) introduced H.R. 4368 to move the management of salt water fisheries back to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, which handled it before a reorganization plan in 1970 moved it to the newly formed National Marine Fisheries Service.
